Claude Code Now Writes Itself (And That is Meta as Hell)

5 min read

Let this sink in for a moment.

Claude Code, the AI coding assistant, is now being developed entirely by Claude Code itself.

Boris Cherny, the creator, recently shared that 100% of his code contributions to the project in the last 30 days were AI-generated.

He's reviewing, directing, approving. But Claude is doing the actual writing.

This is the snake eating its own tail. The snake is also writing the code that tells it how to eat its tail. And somehow, the snake is getting better at it. 🐍

🔄 The Ouroboros of Software

We've moved through stages:

EraWho Writes Code
1980sHumans, painfully
2000sHumans, with Stack Overflow
2020sHumans, with AI helping
2025+AI, with humans reviewing

We're at the last stage. Right now. In real time.

Did you know? The concept of "self-improving AI" used to be sci-fi. Now it's a GitHub commit by an engineer at Anthropic. We're living in the future and it's weird.

🎬 What Does Boris Actually Do Now?

Based on his statements, his role evolved to:

  • Architect: Deciding what should be built
  • Reviewer: Checking if AI's output is correct
  • Prompt Engineer: Guiding AI toward the right solution
  • QA: Testing and validating results

He's not typing function(). He's directing.

It's like being a film director instead of a camera operator. Same industry. Completely different job.

🤯 The Implications

For Individual Developers

If the creator of an AI coding tool is using that tool to build it, what's our excuse?

"I don't trust AI code" gets weaker literally every week.

For Companies

The productivity multiplier is real and it's not small.

One senior engineer + AI = what used to require a team.

This is exciting if you're that engineer. Terrifying if you're the replaced team.

For AI Development

This is a feedback loop:

  1. Claude writes code
  2. Code improves Claude
  3. Improved Claude writes better code
  4. Repeat

The acceleration is not linear. It's exponential. And we're on the curve.

🤔 The Philosophical Question

At what point does it stop being "Boris's code"?

If he's not writing it, is he the author? Or the editor? The director? The manager?

We don't have language for this yet. Our concepts of "authorship" were built for a world where humans did the work.

Did you know? This same question came up with photography. "Is the photographer an artist if the camera does the work?" We eventually decided yes. Maybe we'll decide the same about AI-assisted coding.

🎯 My Take

I think this is the future. Not for everyone. Not for everything.

But for a significant portion of software development? Yes.

The developers who thrive will be the ones who learn to direct rather than just type.

Boris isn't obsolete. He evolved.

The question is: will you?

I'm gonna go think about my career now. (Narrator: He thought about it for 30 minutes, then asked Claude for advice.) 🤯
